The risks of fitting your own car battery

Mistakes can often be made when changing your own car battery.

Car batteries can generally last for five years provided they are given proper maintenance. Its longevity is however also dependent on other factors such as the climate, the vehicles operation, how you use your vehicle (start regularity & distance travelled). Overcharging or undercharging the battery can also cause premature failure.

Before you consider doing it yourself, think of the following :

Do I have the necessary safety gear ?

Am i strong enough to lift the battery out and a new on in ?

Am I technically savvy to complete this ?

Do I have the necessary tools and devices ?

Am i prepared to accept the consequences if things go wrong ?

Is it just easier to get it done by the experts ?

Firstly, using a voltmeter, test the battery voltage, then start the car and test that the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Often people replace a battery due to a faulty alternator. If you have decided that it is your battery, then ensure you have a memory minder that ensures your vehicle retains its electronics and data before removing the old battery. The biggest risk with changing over a car battery is when trying to disconnect the dead battery in the wrong order. Before changing your car battery, you should ensure that the new battery you are replacing it with is fully charged. Then start with disconnecting the negative cable first followed by the positive cable. Undo any of the hold down clamps/brackets and ensure they are well clear of the battery terminals to avoid an accidental short. Be very careful not to drop or misplace the nuts. Lift the dead battery by removing it in an upright position. This is to prevent its acidic solution from leaking out. Respect the weight of the product when lifting as often its in an awkward position and can easily cause an injury to your back or hands. Place the old battery in a safe place to avoid contact with acid residue. You can then place the new battery at the position of the former one.

Generally, it is the result of too much current inside a cell of the battery, which causes a build-up of heat and gas. This can be caused by overcharging, a manufacturing defect, continuous deep discharge, or some type of damaged battery.

The outcome is that the battery experiences extreme pressure inside that swells up and deforms it.

Can I recover it? No - the battery is unrecoverable

There is no point waiting for the battery to “shrink” back as it wont. The ever growing pressure can cause damage to the entire device. Leave the battery in the device only if it is stuck. Never try to “resolve” the swelling yourself by puncturing the battery.

VRLA (Valve regulated Lead Acid) batteries contain a safety valve present, hence the name valve-regulated. Even the term “valve regulated” does not really describe this technology. These are really “recombinant” batteries. This means that oxygen evolved at the positive will mostly recombine with the hydrogen ready to evolve on the negative and thus prevent water loss. The valve is only a safety feature in case dangerous amounts of hydrogen are produced.

Why Do Stop/start vehicles require specialised Batteries?

Basically speaking, Start/Stop vehicle systems work by shutting off the engine whilst the vehicle is stationary. When the brake pedal is released or when the accelerator is engaged, the engine quickly restarts enabling the vehicle to be driven. In more advanced Stop/Start systems, the vehicle may also incorporate regenerative braking or engine power assistance technology. This technology has the ability to switch off the engine when the vehicle is coasting or braking as well as when stationary. Shutting off the engine eliminates the amount of fuel that would otherwise have been used, reducing both vehicle emissions and fuel consumption

What does this mean for the Battery?

In heavy traffic, very heavy use ! The battery in a Start/Stop vehicle may have to start the engine several times in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, the battery must also continue to power the vehicle's electronics, even when the engine isn't running. Manufacturers of Start/Stop and similarly demanding hybrid vehicles have turned to newer battery technologies. There are essentially two types of technologies; 1) Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and 2) Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB).

Battery Replacement

When replacing the battery in a Stop/Start vehicle, ensure that the battery used is a like for like replacement. Only replace EFB with EFB and AGM with AGM Start/Stop compatible batteries. The vehicles engine management system and electronics are configured to the specific battery technology so dont change it. Also avoid fitting a conventional battery in a vehicle with Start/Stop technology. If you fit a non-OEM product, the vehicle may still work, but may not run smoothly and the battery will likely experience premature failure.

The Importance of a quality BMS system In Lithium Batteries

One of the most crucial components of a lithium battery is the internal BMS system. BMS stands for Battery Management System and this part of the battery is extremely important.

Lithium batteries can be in danger of exploding under severe over-charging conditions, causing damage to the battery and posing a threat to your asset and your personal safety. The BMS is a control system which controls and protects the battery cells during performance and from damage preventing potential faults from occurring. A quality BMS system will disconnect loads if the voltage gets too low and disconnect chargers if the voltage gets too high. Over voltage for a prolonged period during charging can cause plating of the metallic lithium on the battery’s anode which permanently degrades performance.

If the battery discharges too low, it becomes impossible to recover using standard battery chargers. So if you have bought a Lithium battery and thought why has this battery discharged to 1 volt and I can no longer charge it, then its most likely due to it’s poor BMS. Unfortunately, there are many of these available online to buy and Consumers are tempted by the cheap price.

Lithium-ion batteries have a major difference from Lead Acid batteries when it comes to balancing the voltages in each individual cell during charging. In Lead Acid batteries if one cell charges faster and reaches full voltage, the typical low end of the charge current, will ensure the other cells get fully charge. So the Lead Acid batteries are self-equalizing during charge. This is not the case with Lithium Batteries. When a Lithium-ion cell is fully charged, it’s voltage begins to rise further which may lead to electrode damage. If the charge of the entire battery is stopped when only one cell is fully charged, the remaining cells do not reach full charge and the battery will operate below peak capacity. A well designed BMS ensures each cell will safely and fully charge before the entire charging process is complete.

Unlike Lead Acid batteries, Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries operate efficiently and safely at temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius or more. But higher operating or storage temperatures will lead to the electrode material degrading. The BMS of a Lithium battery uses embedded thermistors to actively monitor the temperature during operation and will disconnect if the maximum temperature is reached. They also vary in how much current they can handle. The most reliable BMS systems will be rated at 100 amps, despite the battery rating being declared at for instance 50AH or 80 AH or 100AH. So a good question to ask the Retailer or check the specification sheet before purchasing. If they dont know or its missing from the Spec sheet then its a warning sign.

To demonstrate, we show you an example of a very poor BMS system that was discovered in a common 300mm Group 27 100AH rated battery. You can see the corrosion inside the battery, caused by poor quality components. If you look closely, you will read the label on the BMS as only rated to 35 amps. This makes the manufacturing of the battery a lot cheaper, however it makes the performance and life expectancy really poor and the product in application potentially hazardous.

In this case you are not buying what you think you are! You are also limited to what you can use this battery for, as the low rated BMS limits its performance. And just to show you a standard looking BMS from another brand, Im sure you can see the difference for yourself.

A lot of the applications we specify Lithium Batteries for, do have higher surge currents. That’s what makes Lithium so good. Low level rated BMS systems take this advantage away and can be dangerous.

So in conclusion a good BMS system is fundamentally the key to a good quality Lithium battery and essential to its performance. Its a classic case of paying for what you get and the good quality brands are the ones that cost money and reflected in the price you pay.

Unfortunately we see our customers too often being burnt by cheap Lithium failures exposing themselves to harm and damaging their hard earned assets eg. caravan or boat. Whilst you pay a lot more than an AGM battery equivalent, a good quality Lithium is particularly beneficial if you are keeping your asset for 4 plus years, you want best cycling performance, light weight and want fast recharging. This cost versus benefit ratio will do you well over the journey. If you are looking for something to serve your purpose for 4 years or less, you will probably find an AGM battery is best fit for purpose.
